Generation from Power Plants in Maryland

There are 34 power plants operating in Maryland with a capacity rating of 2 or more megawatts (MW). Eighteen of the plants have a generating capacity greater than 100 MW. The combined capacity of the 34 operating plants is approximately 13,300 MW. A megawatt is a measure of the maximum power generating capacity of a power plant and is equal to one million watts of power. New generating projects totaling approximately 800 MW have been proposed for installation in Maryland to meet increasing energy demands throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The plant proposals are in various stages of licensing or construction.

To sustain a reliable electric system, enough generating capacity (MWs) from power plants must be constructed and maintained to meet the maximum demand for electric power by users of the system. This generating capacity can quickly increase production to meet unexpected increases in energy consumption due to events such as unusually hot, humid days or an unexpected power plant outage.

U.S., PJM, and Maryland Generating Capacity by Primary Fuel Type (2004)

For the natural gas and petroleum capacity amounts, the smaller columns represent the dual fired capacity that uses the referenced energy source as the primary fuel. Dual fired capacity includes generators that can burn petroleum-based fuels and gas-based fuels. As an example, gas is currently used to power 40% of the total U.S. generation capacity; 24% is limited to only using gas, 16% can switch to petroleum based fuels.
**Other capacity includes renewable generators, as well as waste, chemical, and other miscellaneous generation sources.
